Transmission Service

What to expect

Most automatic transmissions want a fluid service somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles, though plenty of manufacturers now call their fluid lifetime fill. We check the fluid's colour and smell, confirm the correct specification for your vehicle, and tell you plainly whether a service will help or whether the symptom points somewhere else.

Drain and fill, or flush?

A drain and fill replaces roughly a third to a half of the fluid and is the conservative option. A full flush exchanges nearly all of it. On a high-mileage transmission that has never been serviced, many technicians — us included — prefer the gentler drain and fill. There is genuine debate about flushing neglected units, and we will explain our reasoning rather than just selling the bigger job.

Slipping, flaring, or harsh shifts

These are not fluid-service symptoms. If the transmission is slipping under load or shifting harshly, fresh fluid will not repair worn clutches, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something. We will diagnose the cause before recommending anything.

Using the right fluid matters

Modern transmissions specify fluid by exact manufacturer standard, and the wrong fluid can cause shudder or damage. This is not a place for universal one-size-fits-all product.

Common questions

My manufacturer says lifetime fluid. Is that true?

It means the fluid is designed to last the design life of the transmission, which is not the same as the life you want out of the car. Many technicians recommend servicing anyway, particularly if you tow or sit in heavy traffic.
