The short version

What is actually different about servicing a Acura

Most of what makes an Acura durable is shared with Honda, and most of what makes one expensive to ignore is not. The J-series V6 in the MDX, TL and RL is a timing belt engine, not a chain, and the belt has a real replacement interval. Miss it and the repair stops being a maintenance item and becomes an engine.

The other Acura-specific cost centre is the transmission. The older five- and six-speed automatics are sensitive to fluid condition and want genuine Honda ATF — the judder people describe as "a shudder around 40 mph" is very often the torque converter lock-up clutch reacting to tired fluid, and it is much cheaper to catch at that stage than after.

We tell you which of these apply to your car by year and engine, and we show you the condition of the fluid rather than quoting you a service off a chart.

Pattern recognition

What we see most on Acuras

These are the specific things worth knowing about your make — not a generic checklist. If none of them describe your car, we will tell you that too.

Timing belt on the J-series V6

MDX, TL, RL and related V6 models use a belt with a published interval, usually replaced together with the water pump, tensioner and idlers because the labour is already in the car. We will tell you where you actually are against the interval, not just sell the package.

VCM oil consumption and fouled plugs

Variable Cylinder Management shuts cylinders down to save fuel, and on some V6 model years that shows up as oil consumption and plugs that foul on the deactivated bank. If you are topping up between changes, this is the first thing we check.

Torque converter judder

A light shudder at steady cruise, most noticeable around 40 to 50 mph, before any warning light. Fluid condition is the first check. Caught early it is a fluid service conversation; caught late it is not.

SH-AWD rear differential fluid

The rear drive unit has its own fluid and its own interval, and it is one of the most commonly skipped services on an Acura because nothing warns you. Symptoms show up as a groan or bind in tight turns.

How a visit works

Four steps, and you approve the third one

1. Tell us the symptom

Call, book online, or text us a photo of the dashboard. A real person answers during shop hours.

2. We find the cause

We diagnose the fault rather than reading a code and replacing the part it names.

3. You see it first

Photos and measurements of the actual problem, texted to you, with a price. Nothing proceeds until you say so.

4. We do the approved work

Only what you approved, torqued to specification, road tested, and covered by our written warranty.

No obligation

Not sure whether it is urgent? Send us a photo.

Snap a picture of the dashboard light, the leak, or the worn part and text it to us. A real person will text you back during shop hours — no phone call, no appointment, and we will tell you if it can wait.

Acura questions

Common questions from Acura owners

Does my Acura really need the timing belt done, or is that an upsell?

It depends entirely on your engine. The J-series V6 uses a belt and it is genuinely due at its interval — that one is not optional, because the engine is an interference design and a failed belt does expensive internal damage. The four-cylinder engines use a chain and do not have a scheduled replacement. We will tell you which one you have before you pay for anything.

Can you use regular ATF instead of Honda fluid?

We do not, and we would not recommend it. Honda automatics are unusually specific about friction characteristics, and the wrong fluid is a known cause of shudder and harsh shifts. The correct fluid costs a little more and it is the cheapest part of the whole job.

Is Acura service cheaper than the dealer?

Usually, and for a specific reason: our technicians are salaried rather than paid on what they sell, so there is no built-in reason to find you extra work. You will get posted price ranges and photos of the actual problem before you approve anything.

Do you work on the older RL and Legend?

Often yes, but parts availability is the deciding factor on the oldest cars. Call with your year and model before you make the trip and we will tell you honestly whether we can source what it needs.
