The short version

What is actually different about servicing a Cadillac

The mechanical side of a modern Cadillac is shared with the rest of General Motors, which is good news for parts and pricing. The 3.6-litre V6 is a strong engine with a known appetite for timing chains if oil changes were stretched, and the V8s with cylinder deactivation have a well-documented lifter issue that announces itself as a tick and a misfire code on one specific cylinder.

Where Cadillac diverges is comfort and electronics. Magnetic Ride Control dampers are a genuine engineering advance and a genuine expense, and they fail by leaking rather than by throwing a code you would notice. The infotainment and driver-assist modules generate a large number of stored faults that are consequences of one root cause, which is exactly the situation where guessing gets costly.

We read the whole network, find the fault that explains the others, and photograph what we find before you approve a dollar of work.

Pattern recognition

What we see most on Cadillacs

These are the specific things worth knowing about your make — not a generic checklist. If none of them describe your car, we will tell you that too.

3.6L V6 timing chain wear

Stretched chains from extended oil changes produce a rattle on cold start and a cam-correlation code. Catching it at the noise stage is a very different bill from catching it after it jumps.

Cylinder deactivation lifter failure

On the V8s, a collapsed lifter reads as a persistent misfire on one cylinder with a tick that changes with engine load. It does not fix itself and it can damage the camshaft if driven on.

Magnetic Ride Control dampers

They fail by weeping fluid and losing damping rather than by failing outright. The ride goes floaty gradually enough that most owners never notice until we show them the strut.

Module and network faults

One low battery or one corroded ground can populate a dozen modules with faults. We look for the cause, not the longest list.

How a visit works

Four steps, and you approve the third one

1. Tell us the symptom

Call, book online, or text us a photo of the dashboard. A real person answers during shop hours.

2. We find the cause

We diagnose the fault rather than reading a code and replacing the part it names.

3. You see it first

Photos and measurements of the actual problem, texted to you, with a price. Nothing proceeds until you say so.

4. We do the approved work

Only what you approved, torqued to specification, road tested, and covered by our written warranty.

No obligation

Not sure whether it is urgent? Send us a photo.

Snap a picture of the dashboard light, the leak, or the worn part and text it to us. A real person will text you back during shop hours — no phone call, no appointment, and we will tell you if it can wait.

Cadillac questions

Common questions from Cadillac owners

There is a tick from my V8 and the light is on for one cylinder. What is that?

On a cylinder-deactivation V8 that combination points hard at a collapsed lifter. It is worth diagnosing quickly, because continuing to drive on it is what turns a lifter job into a camshaft job.

Can I replace Magnetic Ride struts with conventional ones?

Conversion kits exist and they work, and for an older Cadillac they can be a rational choice. You lose the adaptive damping and you may get a suspension warning depending on the setup. We will price both honestly and let you decide.

Do you need dealer software for Cadillac diagnostics?

For the great majority of diagnosis and repair, no — we read all modules and perform the relevant service functions. Some module programming remains dealer-only. We will tell you up front if your specific job is in that category.

Is the 3.6 V6 timing chain a design fault or a maintenance issue?

Both, honestly. The early versions were harder on chains than they should have been, and stretched oil-change intervals made it much worse. Regular changes with the correct specification oil are the single biggest thing that keeps it healthy.
